Skipton - the Gateway to the Dales  7470

They say the grass is always greener in the Yorkshire Dales and they could well be right!

Skipton - the Gateway to the Dales

Skipton - the Gateway to the Dales

The picturesque market town of Skipton with its cobbled streets provides our base in the south-west of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. We stay at the Rendezvous Hotel right on the edge of the Leeds-Liverpool canal and its towpath into town.

At the end of the High Street is the 900-year old Skipton Castle. Dating back to medieval times, it is one of the most complete and best-preserved castles in Britain.

Skipton really is ideally located to explore this remarkable corner of England with great walks into the National Park. We could take Lady Anne's Way to Grassington in Wharfedale, a circular hike from the attractive village of Arncliffe or perhaps an attractive section of the Dales Way from Bolton Abbey. Brontë Country, with its wild, windswept moors is just to the south with a chance for a literary-themed walk.

The village of Malham with the spectacular sheer limestone cliff, Malham Cove, lies just to the north of Skipton and could provide another day's venture into the hills.

Highlights:
• Classic dales walking country.
• Historic Skipton and attractive Yorkshire villages.
• Comfortable, modern hotel with good food.

Meals: Accommodation is on a half board basis with breakfasts and dinners taken at the hotel. Picnic lunches are included on days including a guided walk.

Accommodation: The Rendezvous Hotel, Skipton This family-run three-star hotel, whose conservatory restaurant overlooks the canal towpath is a mile's walk into town. The large, modern hotel offers good home-cooked food sourced from local suppliers and also has its own pub, the Snaygill Arms next door. There's a leisure centre with gym, swimming pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. You'll be comfortable in the well appointed en-suite rooms and there's plenty of parking. (Number of rooms: 80)

Travel: Transportation to and from the trailheads, if necessary, is included. Nearest railway and bus stations: Skipton.
