Some of the DOs and DON’Ts of travel insurance

Do make sure you take out your insurance before you travel. It can be very difficult to arrange once your holiday has started.

Do ensure that your holiday leader is aware of your insurance details and any relevant health issues.

Do ensure that your policy includes cover for your expected holiday activities, such as walking with a guide.

Do ensure that you take all documentation for your travel policy with you on holiday, including the emergency assistance telephone number.

Do make sure that you have disclosed any pre-existing medical conditions to your insurer when you take out the policy (including yourself & your dependent family) – even if they are not travelling with you.

Cross 

Don’t take out a “bargain” price policy without thoroughly checking the small print of cover, exclusions and policy excesses. ‘Low price’ usually means ‘low cover’.

Don’t think that buying travel insurance is an unnecessary extra expense on top of your holiday cost.

Don’t rely on your credit card cover – normally this only provides cover for accidents and excludes important features such as repatriation or cancellation cover.
